Hazrat Umar (God as Pleased With Him)
Honorable President, my dear teachers, guests and students Assalam-o-Alaikum.
Hazrat Umar (God be pleased with him) was the second Caliph of Islam. He was born at Makkah during a noble tribe called the Quraish. He received the title of “Farooq” after he embraced Islam. He was one among the only a few persons in Makkah who could read and write.
He was a tall, strong and brave man. He was also a really good wrestler, horse-rider and a swordsman. He was a very daring man. Business was his occupation. He was an enemy of Islam, but an event changed his life completely. One day, he heard his sister reciting verses from the Holy Quran. He listened with interest and when she had finished reciting, he lowered his head, Filled with new spiritual thought, he ran to the Holy Prophet (Peace be upon Him) and embraced Islam. His conversion to Islam was of great value to the Holy Prophet (Peace be upon Him) in his mission of Islam.
Afterwards, he remained very close to the Holy Prophet (peace be upon Him Hazrat Umar (God be pleased with him) participated in the holy wars and proved a great strength for Islam. He remained Caliph for 11 years. He conquered a huge empire during the 11 years of his Khilafat. He introduced an excellent system of administration which served as a model during the total of Islamic history. He introduced a large number of reforms. He organized the army. He was a great man who shaped the destiny of the Muslim Ummah gave much importance to justice and well-being of the people. He led a very simple life. He loved to meet people and inquire about their problems. He followed the saying of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon Him). “Treat your servant as you would treat yourself. Master and servant are both equal before God.”
Hazrat Umar (God be pleased with Him) was kind and sympathetic to the poor. He spent many sleepless nights. He used to roam in the streets to see the conditions of his people. One night he passed by a house and heard children crying. There was a pot of water on tire. The mother told them to travel to sleep and when the food was ready she would wake them up. But the children would not listen. Hazrat Umar (God be pleased with him) asked the woman. “What is the matter?” She said that have nothing to eat. There was no money and no grain within the house. Her husband had died. The children were crying for food. He helped the widow with eatables, dinars and clothes.
He was very strict in the case of judgment. He wouldn’t spare anybody , not even his own son if wrong was committed by him. For him rich and poor, high-class or middle-class were all equal before law.
One day, while Hazrat Umar (God be pleased with him) was saying his prayers in the mosque. A non-Muslim who’s name was Feroze killed Hazrat Umar with a knife. Hazrat Umar (God be pleased with him) lies buried near the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) and Hazrat Abu Bakar (God be pleased with him) in Medina.
